Modern rap: BAP. releases his new sample-heavy single "Same Shoes, No Company" (BAP.) (Personal collection/courtesy of BAP.)

Cleverly titled “Same Shoes, No Company”, the new single from Jakarta producer Kareem Soeharjo, or BAP. samples retro pop indie acts White Shoes’ and The Couples Company’s jazzy guitar solos and 60s-inspired pop chords. The first two lines are also a nod to Jakarta’s retro pop legend Naif. Featuring Kareem’s fast rapping, the song is a romantic admiration for a special someone “You shine in the dark/ like an eclipse that burns the eyes.” Mellow and chill, “Same Shoes, No Company” shows a different, sweeter side to Kareem.
